Bristol, Virginia is an independent city in the far southwest of the state, and on a map it cannot be read without its neighbour. The line between Virginia and Tennessee runs straight down the middle of State Street, so the downtown grid continues seamlessly across the border into Bristol, Tennessee. Around this shared core, neighbourhoods spread over rolling Appalachian valleys.
The city is known as the Birthplace of Country Music, thanks to the 1927 recording sessions held in Bristol that introduced performers such as the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. The illuminated sign spanning State Street, declaring the city a good place to live, is a familiar local symbol, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum tells the story of those recordings.
A Bristol map poster shows a downtown built around a border, then opens out to curving residential streets, highways and the ridges that frame the valley. Interstate 81 cuts across the landscape nearby, adding a strong diagonal.
