Buriti dos Lopes is a municipality in the north of Piauí, in north-eastern Brazil. It lies in the low country not far from Piauí's short Atlantic coastline and the city of Parnaíba. Its name refers to the buriti, a tall palm that grows in wet ground across this part of Brazil. The landscape is mostly flat, with farmland, scrub and low-lying areas that fill with water in the rainy season.
From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets around a central square and church, stretched along the main road. Outside the centre, the lines quickly thin to rural roads and tracks across open land. Seasonal lagoons and watercourses break up the plain, and small communities sit at intervals along the routes leading away from town.
