Buriti is a municipality in the east of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, in the transitional country between the cerrado and the drier lands toward Piauí. On the map, the town is a small, compact grid of streets, with a clear centre and edges that fade quickly into the surrounding countryside.
The town shares its name with the buriti palm, a tree common in the wetter valleys and along streams of this part of Brazil. Beyond the urban area, the landscape is open, crossed by unpaved roads, tracks and small watercourses that link farms and smaller communities to the town.
