Campo de Criptana is a town in Ciudad Real province, in the heart of La Mancha. It is best known for the row of whitewashed windmills lining the Sierra de los Molinos, the ridge above the town. These mills are widely associated with the famous episode in Don Quixote in which the knight charges at windmills he takes for giants.
The town sits at the foot of that ridge. On the map, its streets spread across the lower ground and climb toward the hill, with the old quarter of Albaicín on the slopes near the mills. Around the town, the plains of La Mancha stretch out in large fields and vineyards, divided by long straight rural roads.
