Cartersville is the seat of Bartow County in northwest Georgia, north of Atlanta along Interstate 75. Its downtown grew up around the railroad, and the map still shows it: a compact grid of blocks lined up with the tracks, with the county courthouse and main street at its centre.
South of town, the Etowah River bends through farmland and woods, and on its banks lie the Etowah Indian Mounds, one of the most important Mississippian sites in the Southeast. To the east, the wooded shoreline of Lake Allatoona breaks the land into long fingers of water.
