Center Point lies northeast of Birmingham in the Appalachian foothills, where parallel ridges and valleys run southwest to northeast. The terrain shapes the map. Main roads follow the valley floors, and residential streets curl into cul-de-sacs and loops wherever the land starts to climb.
The result is a pattern typical of postwar American suburbs, drawn over a folded landscape. Long commercial arteries cross the center, and quiet neighborhoods branch off them in organic shapes. For decades Center Point was an unincorporated community before becoming a city in its own right in the early 2000s. It remains closely tied to Birmingham, and many residents travel between the two every day along routes that are easy to follow on the map.
