Chalon-sur-Saône lies in Burgundy, on the west bank of the broad Saône river, where the Canal du Centre meets it. From above, the river is the dominant shape. The old town clusters on the western side, and the Île Saint-Laurent sits in the river, connected by bridges to both banks.
The town is best known as the birthplace of Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor who made one of the earliest surviving photographs in the 1820s. A museum dedicated to him and to the history of photography stands on the riverbank. Chalon has long been a river port and trading town for wine from the Côte chalonnaise.
