Chintamani lies on the Deccan plateau in Chikkaballapur district, in the southeastern corner of Karnataka, not far from the border with Andhra Pradesh. The land here is gently rolling, and the town's map shows a dense centre with roads radiating toward surrounding villages and the district's other towns across a dry, open landscape.
Like much of this part of Karnataka, the area around Chintamani depends on tanks, the traditional reservoirs built to catch monsoon rain. They appear on the map as irregular shapes of water scattered among the fields, and they give the poster a distinctive rhythm that sets it apart from river or coastal towns.
The wider region is known for sericulture, and silk and agriculture remain important to local life.
