Chiquinquirá lies in the department of Boyacá, in a high valley of the Colombian Andes at around 2,500 metres above sea level. The town is best known as the home of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá, whose image is venerated as the patroness of Colombia and draws pilgrims from across the country.
On the map, the town is laid out in a regular grid of streets around its central squares, with the basilica and its plaza forming the focus of the centre. The grid extends outward across the valley floor, while the surrounding land rises into green hills and farmland.
