Ciechanów lies in northern Mazovia, about a hundred kilometres north of Warsaw, on the small Łydynia river. From above, the town has a compact historic centre on higher ground, with the river valley running along one side. Around it, residential districts of houses and apartment blocks spread outward, with roads and a railway crossing the map.
The town's best-known landmark is the castle of the Dukes of Masovia, a brick Gothic fortress from the fourteenth century with two round towers, standing in the river valley. Ciechanów was also the birthplace of the Romantic-era scholar and poet Aleksander Świętochowski? No — it is associated with the region's history as a ducal seat, and today it is a regional centre for northern Mazovia.
