Cinisello Balsamo lies immediately north of Milan in the densely built plain of Lombardy, sharing borders with Sesto San Giovanni and the southern edge of Monza. The town was created in 1928 by joining two older villages, Cinisello and Balsamo, and on the map the two historic cores can still be traced within the wider fabric of later housing.
Much of the town grew rapidly after the Second World War, when workers moved north to jobs in Milan's industrial belt. The result is a closely packed mix of apartment blocks, factories and schools, cut by major roads and motorway links, with the A4 and the Milan ring roads running close by.
Parco Nord Milano, one of the largest parks in the Milan area, stretches along the southern side, and Villa Ghirlanda Silva, a historic villa with its own garden, sits near the centre. A Cinisello Balsamo map poster shows how green space and dense streets fit together on the edge of a great city.
