Citrus Heights sits in the northeast of the Sacramento metropolitan area, between Sacramento and the foothills toward Folsom and Roseville. The city only incorporated in 1997, but the area was settled and farmed long before. On a map it shows the classic pattern of Californian postwar suburbs: a coarse grid of major roads, with quieter, looping streets filling each square.
Sunrise Boulevard, Greenback Lane, Auburn Boulevard and Antelope Road are the main arteries. Their intersections mark the commercial centres, including the large Sunrise Mall area. Between them, cul-de-sacs, schools and small parks form a dense residential fabric, broken up by the winding green lines of creeks that cross the city.
