Coelho Neto sits in eastern Maranhão, on the bank of the Parnaíba River, which here forms the border between Maranhão and Piauí. From above, the river is the first thing you see: a broad, curving band that holds the town in place on one side, while the streets spread inland away from the water.
The urban pattern is mostly regular blocks laid out in a loose grid, typical of towns in the Brazilian northeast that grew along a river and a main road. Toward the edges the blocks thin out and roads run off into open country, where the map shows long straight tracks, scattered lots and the winding lines of smaller streams feeding the Parnaíba.
