Colinas is a municipality in the interior of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, in the transition zone where the cerrado meets drier northeastern landscapes. The name means hills in Portuguese, a fitting description of the gently rolling terrain around the town. From above, the urban area is a compact cluster of blocks surrounded by ranches and farmland.
The town centre follows a loosely regular layout of streets typical of Brazilian interior towns, with a central square and blocks spreading outward. At the edges the grid becomes more irregular and gives way to roads that head across the countryside toward neighbouring municipalities.
