Desnogorsk is in the south-east of Smolensk Oblast, on the shore of a reservoir created on the upper Desna River. The town was built in the 1970s for workers at the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, and on a map it looks exactly like what it is: a planned settlement of large residential blocks, wide streets and green spaces laid out in one go.
The reservoir is the town's most important feature. It gives Desnogorsk a long shoreline with beaches and open views, and its outline curves around the edge of the town. On the map, the water forms a large, clean shape, and the housing districts line up along it in an orderly way.
The power plant sits a short distance from the residential area, connected by roads and service lines. Forest surrounds everything, giving the town a sharp, well-defined outline.
