Devgadh Bāriya lies in eastern Gujarat, in Dahod district, where the plains start to rise into wooded hills. It was once the capital of the princely state of Baria, and the old town still has the close, winding lanes of a historic royal seat, grouped around its markets and temples.
From above, the town sits within an uneven landscape. Hills and forest close in on several sides, streams and small reservoirs appear in the valleys, and roads have to wind their way out toward the rest of the region. Newer housing spreads along these routes, loosening the dense pattern of the old centre.
