Dum Duma lies in Tinsukia district in the far east of Assam, on the broad plains that run toward the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The town itself is modest in footprint: a main road corridor lined with markets and offices, with smaller lanes branching off into residential neighbourhoods that thin out quickly into greenery and fields.
The surroundings define it. Upper Assam is tea country, and around Dum Duma the map fills with the regular shapes of garden estates, their internal tracks and labour lines forming patterns quite unlike an ordinary town grid. Streams and drainage channels wind across the flat land, a reminder of how much water this monsoon-fed region handles every year.
