ETH Zurich was founded in 1855 as the Swiss federal polytechnic and is known worldwide for science and engineering. Albert Einstein studied here, and many Nobel laureates are linked to the institution. Its main building, designed by Gottfried Semper, stands on a hillside above the old town, with a second large campus at Hönggerberg on the city's edge.
The map around the main building shows a steep terrain. To the west, streets descend to the old town and the Limmat river. A small funicular connects the lower city with the university terrace.
