Zürich is defined on a map by water. The city grew around the northern end of Lake Zurich, where the lake narrows into the Limmat, a short river that runs northwest through the centre. The Sihl comes in from the southwest and joins it just past the main railway station, so the core of the city sits on a wedge of land between two rivers.
The medieval old town lines both banks of the Limmat. A sequence of short bridges crosses it, and the Grossmünster and Fraumünster anchor it. To the west, Bahnhofstrasse runs straight from the station to the lakeshore. Beyond the centre, the Uetliberg ridge rises on one side and the Zürichberg on the other, keeping later districts in long bands along the valley floor.
Switzerland's largest city is compact enough for a Zürich map poster to show the whole story in one frame. It takes in the curve of the lakeshore, the rail tracks fanning out from the Hauptbahnhof, the denser blocks of Kreis 4 and 5, and the forested slopes where the streets stop abruptly. Rail approach
The tracks leading into Zürich Hauptbahnhof form a wide band of parallel lines running west. They are one of the most graphic elements on any map of the city.
Two green ridges
Uetliberg to the southwest and Zürichberg to the northeast frame the valley with forest. They leave clear blank space on the map where the street network simply ends.
