Kaiserstuhl is a small town in the canton of Aargau, on the south bank of the Rhine where the river forms the border with Germany. It is one of the smallest municipalities in Switzerland by area, so a map of it reads almost like a detailed plan: a handful of streets, the river, and the bridge leading across to the German shore.
The old town was laid out in the thirteenth century on a slope above the river. Its plan is roughly triangular, with walls and houses stepping down from an upper tower to the water. The shape is clear from above and gives the map a strong, simple geometry that larger towns rarely have.

A single road bridge crosses the Rhine to Germany and links the old town with Hohentengen, making the river the central line of the composition.
