Freguesia is a neighbourhood on Ilha do Governador, the largest island in Guanabara Bay, within the city of Rio de Janeiro. From above, the island's irregular coastline dominates the scene, with small coves, beaches and headlands framing streets that climb the gentle hills of the interior.
The island is home to Rio's main international airport at Galeão, and bridges and causeways connect it to the mainland. Freguesia itself sits away from the runways, and its layout is more residential and irregular, shaped by the terrain and the bay rather than a single master plan.
