Hajdúböszörmény is on the Great Hungarian Plain northwest of Debrecen. Its town plan is one of the most distinctive in Hungary. From above, the centre is a round core surrounded by concentric rings of streets, and roads leave it in every direction like spokes. The shape is often compared to a wheel or a target.
The town was one of those granted to the hajdú soldiers by István Bocskai in the early seventeenth century, and it still carries their name. The circular layout is linked to that defensive past, when the ring of the old town could be protected. Around it, the flat farmland of the Hajdúság stretches out in every direction.

Hajdú heritage
