Haliyal lies in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, where the open farmland of the Deccan gives way to the forested slopes of the Western Ghats. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets at a junction of regional roads. Fields fill the ground immediately around it, and wider views pick up tanks, streams and the dark mass of woodland to the west.
As a taluk headquarters, Haliyal serves a large surrounding area of villages, and its road pattern reflects that role. Routes toward Dharwad, Dandeli and the coast leave the centre in different directions, and the older streets near the middle are tighter and less regular than the newer blocks at the edges.
A Haliyal map poster shows a town on a threshold. On one side the land is cleared and cultivated. On the other it turns toward the forests of the Ghats. In black and white, that shift appears as a change in texture, from open parcels to fewer, winding lines.
