Humberto de Campos lies on the coast of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, in a low landscape of rivers, mangroves and sand. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets beside a tidal river. The water winds out toward the Atlantic through channels and wetlands, while roads lead inland across flat ground. Much of the surrounding map is water and vegetation, not streets.
The town takes its name from the writer Humberto de Campos, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, who was born here when the place was still called Miritiba. The region lies near the coastal dunes and lagoons that Maranhão is known for. The map shows the transition from a small settled core to a wide, almost untouched landscape of estuary and shoreline.
