Ibitiara is a small town in the interior of Bahia, in the highland region linked to the Chapada Diamantina. From above, it has the classic layout of a Brazilian interior town: a short grid around a central square and church, with a few main roads leaving the centre and quickly becoming country roads through open land.
The municipality is largely rural, and farming and livestock shape its economy and its calendar. As in many towns of the sertão and the Bahian highlands, the town centre is where people gather for markets, church festivals and public services, while families spread out across the countryside.
