Ipu lies in western Ceará, at the base of the Serra da Ibiapaba, a long escarpment that rises sharply out of the sertão. The town's streets spread across the lower ground, and just above them the land climbs steeply to the plateau. On a map, this shows as a sudden change: dense town streets on one side and a strip of steep slope on the other.
The town is best known for the Bica do Ipu, a waterfall that runs down the escarpment close to the town. It appears in José de Alencar's 1865 novel Iracema, one of the founding works of Brazilian literature, as the place where the title character bathed. Because of that, the name Ipu is familiar to many Brazilians who have never visited.
