Jefferson City rises from the south bank of the Missouri River, roughly halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis. It was chosen as the state capital in the 1820s and named after Thomas Jefferson. On a map the river forms a hard northern edge. The downtown grid sits on the bluffs above it, and the city then spreads south and west across rolling, creek-cut ground.
The Missouri State Capitol stands on the bluff overlooking the river, and its grounds make a clear open space at the top of the grid. Nearby are the walls of the old Missouri State Penitentiary, which operated for well over a century and is now open for tours, and Lincoln University, founded after the Civil War by Black Union veterans.
A Jefferson City map poster shows how a river capital is built. There is a formal grid close to the water, bridges carrying highways across to the floodplain on the north side, and newer neighbourhoods curving along the valleys to the south. Highway bridges cross from downtown to the low north bank, where the Katy Trail follows the old railbed. The river itself is broad and pale on the print.
Creek valleys
South of downtown, streets bend around small creeks and ridges. They move away from the straight grid into looser, winding residential patterns.
