Karachev lies in Bryansk Oblast in western Russia, east of the regional capital. It is one of the oldest towns in the area, first mentioned in chronicles in 1146. The town sits by the small Snezhet river, and the landscape around it is gently rolling, with fields and patches of forest.
On a map the town is built around a few main streets, with a looser grid of residential blocks and private houses around them. The railway between Bryansk and Oryol passes through, and the main road follows a similar route, giving the town a clear east-west axis. The river valley winds along one side, leaving a softer line of meadow and water.
