Karlsfeld lies on the north-western edge of Munich, in the Dachau district of Upper Bavaria, between the city boundary and the town of Dachau. It grew from a small settlement on the Dachau moor into a sizeable residential community over the twentieth century. On the map it is a dense network of housing streets framed by main roads, the railway and the farmland that remains.
The Karlsfelder See, an artificial lake at the edge of the community, is a popular place for swimming and walks. The small Würm river passes through the town on its way north toward the Amper. The S-Bahn line gives residents a short ride into Munich.
