Kataiya lies in western Bihar, near the state's border with Uttar Pradesh, on some of the flattest land in India. Seen from above there are no hills to bend the streets, so the town's shape comes from roads and water: a main thoroughfare, a denser core of lanes around it and a wide surround of rectangular fields divided by paths and irrigation channels.
The plain here is the product of rivers. Over centuries the tributaries of the Ganges have laid down the soil that makes this one of the most intensively farmed landscapes on earth, and the map shows it in the neat patchwork that begins where the houses end. Ponds and tanks appear as small, sharp shapes scattered between settlements.
