La Solana is in the province of Ciudad Real, on the wide, level plains of La Mancha. The town forms a dense, rounded mass of low whitewashed houses. From above, streets lead in from every direction toward the Plaza Mayor and the church of Santa Catalina at the centre. Beyond the last houses the land opens into vineyards, cereal fields and olive groves.
The town has a particular place in Spanish musical theatre. The zarzuela La rosa del azafrán by Jacinto Guerrero is set in La Solana, and the saffron harvest it portrays was once a familiar part of local life. Agriculture still defines the landscape around the town, which is divided into long, narrow plots reaching toward the horizon.
