Lodi stands above the Adda River in the flat Lombard plain southeast of Milan. The old town is compact and roughly oval, with streets leading inward to Piazza della Vittoria and the cathedral. To the east, the Adda flows in wide curves, and the bridge that crosses it is one of the most recognisable points on the map.
The town was founded in 1158 by Frederick Barbarossa after the earlier Lodi, now Lodi Vecchio, was destroyed. In 1796 the bridge over the Adda gave its name to the Battle of Lodi, an early victory for Napoleon Bonaparte. The Renaissance Tempio dell'Incoronata is among its best-known buildings.
A Lodi map poster shows the contrast between the dense medieval centre and the open, cultivated plain. Irrigation canals and farm roads draw straight lines through the countryside, while the Adda brings the only real curves into the composition.
