Louga is a regional capital in northwestern Senegal, in the dry, sandy country between Dakar and Saint-Louis. The land is flat, and on a map the town spreads outward evenly in blocks of low houses and courtyards, with main roads passing through toward the coast and the north. The edges of the town fade gradually into open ground.
The town grew along the route between Senegal's two historic centres, and its main streets reflect that role as a stopping point and regional market. Wider avenues carry traffic through the centre, while smaller streets form a looser pattern of residential blocks. Open spaces, markets and schools appear as breaks in the grid.
Louga is known in Senegal for its cultural life, including a folk festival that brings music and dance groups from across the region.
