Mahmudābād is a town in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, on the flat, fertile plain of the old Awadh region. It is best known as the seat of the Mahmudabad estate, one of the prominent taluqdari estates of Awadh. The estate’s family played a notable role in the region’s political and cultural life, and their fort, the qila, remains the town’s best-known landmark.
From above, the town has the layered form typical of old north Indian market centres. Narrow, irregular lanes cluster near the historic core, bazaar streets follow older routes, and newer neighbourhoods spread in a more regular pattern toward the edges. Beyond them the map opens into farmland, where field boundaries, ponds and village tracks form a quiet pattern around the town.
