Maple Ridge sits on the north bank of the Fraser River, at the eastern edge of Metro Vancouver. On the map its southern boundary is water, a broad, slow band of river with sloughs and low islands. The Lougheed Highway runs east to west parallel to the shore, and the town centre, the old Haney area, clusters near where road and river meet.
North of the centre the grid loosens. Subdivisions follow the rolling ground, then give way to farmland along the Alouette River and finally to unbroken forest. Golden Ears Provincial Park, one of the largest in the province, fills the upper edge of any wide frame. Few suburbs show so clearly where the city stops and the mountains begin.
Since 2009 the Golden Ears Bridge has linked Maple Ridge across the Fraser to Langley, and its long span is easy to pick out in black and white. A Maple Ridge map poster captures that whole sequence in one sheet, from river to highway, neighbourhoods to farmland, and farmland to the foothills.

The Alouette winds through farmland north of the town centre. Its meanders are a soft counterpoint to the straight suburban roads around it.
