Matinha lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a region of low, flat land in northern Maranhão that floods widely during the rainy season. For part of the year, fields and pastures turn into shallow lakes and marshes, and the landscape changes with the water. This shapes where people build and how roads cross the land.
From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on slightly higher ground. Roads lead out across the flat country toward neighbouring communities, while the lakes and wetlands around them appear as irregular open shapes. The contrast between the neat town and the fluid landscape is very clear.
