Mechcheri lies in the Salem district of western Tamil Nadu, on open country between the foothills of the Eastern Ghats and the Kaveri basin. Seen from above, the town is modest and practical: a main road carries most of the traffic, and the denser lanes of the centre cluster around it before loosening into scattered houses, field boundaries and small bodies of water.
The name is known well beyond the town through the Mecheri sheep, a hardy breed of the area valued for its meat and its skin. It is a reminder that the landscape around the streets is a working one, where grazing land and fields press close to the edge of the built-up area and roads fan out toward neighbouring villages.
