Micheng is the seat of Midu County, in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture of western Yunnan. Like many towns in this part of the province, it lies in a bazi, a flat basin surrounded by mountains, where the level ground supports farming and the town. Dali and Erhai Lake lie to the north-west.
On a map, the basin makes the town's shape. The built-up area sits on the flat floor, with older streets at the centre and newer districts in more regular blocks around them. Roads cross the basin and leave through the valleys, while the frame's edges are taken up by farmland and the start of the mountain slopes.
