Mingguang lies in the far west of Yunnan province, in the mountainous country near the border with Myanmar. The area is high and deeply folded, with forested ridges, terraced slopes and narrow valleys. On a map, the settlement is a modest cluster of streets where the valley opens enough to build. Roads leave it by winding along contours and watercourses.
This corner of Yunnan sits in the wider Gaoligong mountain region, known for its forests and biodiversity, and for long-standing trade routes that once crossed toward Burma. The terrain decides almost everything about the local road pattern. There are no straight lines here for long, and each road bends with the ground it crosses.
