Mogaung Map Poster & Print
Mogaung lies in Kachin State in the far north of Myanmar, in a valley crossed by the Mogaung River. On a map, the town stretches along the river, and the railway line from Mandalay to Myitkyina passes close by. The river's meanders and the straight line of the tracks are the two strongest marks on the sheet.
This was once the seat of an old Shan principality. Much later, in 1944, the town was the scene of heavy fighting, when Allied Chindit forces took it during the Burma campaign. It is also the gateway to the jade-mining region of Hpakant to the west, which has long brought traders along the roads that run through town.
A Mogaung map poster shows a compact grid of streets beside a river that keeps changing direction. Past the edge of town the drawing opens out into low ground and then into hills. It is a clear, uncluttered image of a place that has been a crossroads for trade and travel in the region for centuries.
