Monor lies in Pest County, south-east of Budapest, on the edge of the Great Hungarian Plain. It is a long, spread-out town. On the map its streets run in straight lines across flat land and are crossed by the main railway from the capital toward Cegléd and Szolnok, which has shaped the town's growth since the nineteenth century.
Monor is best known for Strázsahegy, a gentle hill on the edge of town lined with hundreds of small wine cellars, one of the largest cellar villages in Hungary. From above, the cellar rows appear as a dense pattern of narrow lanes, very different from the broad residential streets and garden plots elsewhere in town.
