Monterotondo Map Poster & Print
Monterotondo stands on a hill north-east of Rome, overlooking the Tiber valley. The name means round mountain, and the map makes the reason clear. The medieval centre is wrapped tightly around the top of the hill in curving streets that follow the contours. Newer neighbourhoods spread down the slopes and across the flatter ground below.
At the heart of the old town is the Palazzo Orsini, later owned by the Barberini, a reminder of the noble families who once controlled the area. In 1867 Garibaldi's volunteers fought for the town during their campaign towards Rome. Today, the lower town and the valley are tied to the capital by road and rail.
A Monterotondo map poster shows the contrast between the rounded, compact historic core and the looser, more regular growth around it. The curve of the old streets gives the centre a spiral look that stands out immediately. The valley floor and the line of the Tiber provide a calm counterweight on one side.
