Nellore Map Poster
Nellore lies in southern Andhra Pradesh, on the southern bank of the Penna River and a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal. The land around it is flat and irrigated. From above, the city appears as a dense core of streets near the river, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and by fields broken up by tanks, canals and roads leading out across the plain.
The name is usually traced to nellu, the Telugu word for paddy, which suits a district known for its rice. Nellore is also the home of the Nellore cattle breed. On the riverbank stands the Ranganathaswamy temple, one of the city's oldest landmarks and still a focal point for the older streets around it.
