Oshawa runs north from the shore of Lake Ontario, and the lake gives the map a clean, nearly straight southern edge. Behind it, the city is set out on a broad grid of concession roads that dates from early land surveys. Wooded creek valleys, including Oshawa Creek, run south to the lake. On the map they appear as green ribbons cutting diagonally through the blocks.
Highway 401 crosses the city east to west, a wide band that separates the lakeside neighbourhoods from the downtown and older districts to the north. Oshawa is closely linked with General Motors, whose assembly plant made it the centre of Canada's car industry. Its founder, Sam McLaughlin, built Parkwood, a mansion and gardens now open to the public.
Farther north, newer subdivisions with curving streets fill out the grid, and the campuses of Ontario Tech University and Durham College occupy a large area near the city's northern edge.
