Richmond Hill lies directly north of Toronto in York Region, and its plan begins with Yonge Street, the historic road that runs straight north through the middle of the city. Around it, a grid of concession roads divides the land into large squares. Each square is filled with its own loops of residential crescents, cul-de-sacs and small parks.
The southern edge is marked by Highway 407 and the eastern side by Highway 404, both drawn on the map as heavy, sweeping lines. In the north the ground rises into the Oak Ridges Moraine. There, Lake Wilcox, a scattering of kettle lakes and wooded conservation land break up the suburban pattern with softer shapes.
For decades the city was home to the David Dunlap Observatory, whose telescope was long the largest in Canada. Its dome still stands on open land near the centre.
