Paratinga lies on the São Francisco River in the interior of Bahia. The town is laid out along the riverbank, with a modest grid of streets extending back from the water. Beyond them, dry sertão countryside stretches out, crossed by rural roads and marked by the green line of vegetation that follows the river.
The São Francisco is one of Brazil's most important rivers, and towns like Paratinga have long depended on it for water, fishing and transport. The broad channel, its sandbanks and islands take up a large part of the map and give the town its sense of place.
