Pennāgaram is a town in Dharmapuri district in western Tamil Nadu, in dry, rocky country dotted with hills and boulders. It is the administrative centre of the taluk that includes Hogenakkal, where the Kaveri river crashes through a rocky gorge in a series of falls on its way from Karnataka into the Tamil Nadu plains.
The town itself is a modest cluster of streets and lanes, denser around the old centre and bazaar and more open toward the edges. The roads leaving town head through scrubby hills and farmland, and one of the most travelled leads west toward the river and the falls, which draw visitors from across southern India.
