Pittsburg is in Crawford County, in the corner of southeast Kansas once known for coal mining. Its layout follows the prairie model. A regular grid of streets runs north–south and east–west, a main commercial avenue crosses downtown, and railway lines cut across the grid at an angle. These are clear remnants of a town that grew quickly around mining and rail.
On the south side, the campus of Pittsburg State University occupies a wide section of the grid, with open lawns and larger buildings. Outside town, the map shows many small lakes and ponds that formed when abandoned strip pits filled with water. They appear as scattered irregular shapes against the straight lines of section roads.
