Plavsk is a small town in the southern part of Tula Oblast, south of Moscow. It takes its name from the Plava River, which runs through it in a series of bends. On the map, the town reads as a loose cluster of streets on both banks. Low-rise houses and garden plots give it a fine, grainy texture rather than dense blocks.
A railway line passes through the town, and its long straight course contrasts with the curving river. Roads leave in several directions across gently rolling farmland of the Central Russian Upland. Along the Plava, the ground dips into a shallow valley, and the streets bend to follow it.
