Pontarlier is a town in the Doubs department, high in the Jura mountains close to the Swiss border. At around 800 metres above sea level it is one of the highest towns of its size in France. The Doubs river flows through it, and the old centre lies along its banks.
On the map, the town fills a broad valley floor, with its main street running through the historic core and the eighteenth-century Porte Saint-Pierre gateway. Newer neighbourhoods spread outwards, and wooded ridges close the view on every side, broken by roads leading to Switzerland and the Loue valley.
A Pontarlier map poster also recalls the town's reputation as the historic capital of absinthe, once produced here by several distilleries. Just south, the Château de Joux guards a narrow pass, a clear example of how the mountains have always shaped this border town.
